Get Involved: Contact Your Legislators

Currently, there is no unified, cutting-edge research effort to understand the unique issues of pediatric brain structure, development patterns, and related diseases.

Without  this focused effort, formulating therapies and cures for the many diagnosed and undiagnosed children’s developmental disabilities related to congenital or acquired brain injuries and structures is, at best, happenstance. With today’s new discoveries we have a unique opportunity to address both the growing number of pediatric brain disorders and to link the understanding of the young child’s brain to the issues of elder brain dysfunction; in both cases avoiding or mitigating devastating life impacts and substantial medical costs associated with long-term care.

But, we need your help. Contact your U.S. Representative and Senators and urge them to support this essential issue. A brief e-mail can make your voice and the voices of millions of children heard!
Your Voice Counts!
Speak out and ask your elected officials to increase funding for pediatric brain, stem cell and health research today. The president’s 2005 proposed budgets for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are not sufficient to ensure that all promising research opportunities can be pursued.

Reality Snapshots

Congress is spending your tax dollars. Let them know how you want that money invested.

Write, call and/or visit your senators and representatives to inform them that funding for pediatric brain and stem cell research is a priority to you and your family. We encourage you to use these tips to personalize your letter:

    • Insert a paragraph telling a personal story about how medical research has impacted you or someone in your family.
    • Include your thoughts about how you need medical research to help you, a family member or a friend who is affected by a pediatric neurological disorder

Ask your family and friends to take action too!

Ways to Contact Your Legislators
E-mail addresses for your representatives can be found on the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives web sites, or visit The Coalition for the Advancement of Medical Research.

Sign a Petition in Support of Stem Cell Research

Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) has written a message to President Bush stating the need for a change in the federal stem cell research policy. Please go to www.feinstein.senate.gov/stemcell.html to sign this petition.

The organization "People of Faith for Stem Cell Research" started a petition to let the President know that many people of faith in America are informed voters who support stem cell research. To view and sign this petition, go to http://www.pfaith.org/.
