Objective To accelerate the development of therapies for pediatric neurological disorders by establishing Clinical Centers of Excellence for Pediatric Neurological Disorders.
Need At least 14 million children in this country have a brain disorder for which there is no treatment or cure. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), this figure represents 17% of children between birth and 19 years of age. Today, when a potential treatment advances to clinical stage, tremendous obstacles are encountered by the researchers and advocacy groups championing the treatment, primarily because clinicians experienced with devising pediatric clinical trials for brain disorders are scarce, the potential risks of pediatric trials discourage institutional review boards and scare drug companies, and biomarkers or imaging technologies readily used for adult trials have not been adapted to pediatric populations.
Solution By focusing solely on clinical research related to pediatric neurological patients, Clinical Centers of Excellence will make the clinical testing of treatments for pediatric neurological disorders easier and faster, ensuring that laboratory discoveries are translated more quickly into safe, effective treatments.
