Loving Healing Press is an independently owned publishing company with the purpose of “publishing books the redefine what is possible for healing mind and spirit since 2003.”
Founded by Victor Volkman, much of the books published by Loving Healing Press revolve around themes of self-help, personal growth, trauma recovery, and overcoming physical disabilities.
Especially relevant to the CNS Foundation community are the books that are assets to young children learning to navigate the world around them and addressing issues of how to consider those who are differently-abled. CNS Foundation recently read three of books published by Loving Healing Press: “My Friend Suhana: A Story of Friendship and Cerebral Palsy” by Shaila Abdullah and Aanyah Abdullah, “Cinderella’s Magical Wheelchair: An Empowering Fairy Tale” by Jewel Kats and Richa Kinra, and “What Do You Use To Help Your Body?: Maggie Explores the World of Disabilities” by Jewel Kats and Richa Kinra.
“My Friend Suhana” tells the story of a young girl that forms a close bond with another young girl with Cerebral Palsy, mirroring an experience that the author’s daughter, Aanyah Abdullah, had experienced with volunteering with her mother. Through art, the girls come to communicate with and understand one another. Along with providing easy-to-understand information about Cerebral Palsy for a younger audience, “My Friend Suhana” emphasizes that communication and friendship can occur in non-traditional ways.
“Cinderella’s Magical Wheelchair” is a fun take on the classic fairytale, “Cinderella”, except this Cinderella dons a Magical Wheelchair to the Prince’s ball. While her Evil Stepsisters find Cinderella’s interest in the Ball to be a waste of time, Cinderella quickly wins over the Prince with her charm and grace.
“What Do You Use to Help Your Body?” addresses many of the devices that people use on a daily basis to help their bodies, from walkers to prosthetic limbs to communication boards, through the eyes of a young girl. By going through the range of devices that are used to assist the body in its regular function, the book normalizes the non-natural objects that become part of the human body.
Other titles of interest from Loving Healing Press include “The Princess and the Ruby: An Autism Fairy Tale” and “I’m Not Weird, I have Sensory Processing Disorder“, with more books coming regularly.
Loving Healing Press publishes books for children that address so many of the issues that are not prevalent in mainstream children’s stories that are still important to address, both within and outside the community. These texts are a must-read for anyone with or without an affected child!
